I want to apologize in advance for potentially irritating or disappointing anyone. I never have the intention of being an asshole to anyone, least of all my members. And if you think something I say in this regard is wrong or unnecessary, please feel free to debate this issue. These are you characters and your story, so I don't want to impede on your creativity any more than I already will be, however, it is my duty as admin to make sure everything adheres to what the site is about and what is expected of characters and their stories.
Please do not walk away from reading this message thinking that your plans are completely foiled and I hate you. That couldn't be further from the truth. I think this has the potential to be one of the most interesting plots on the site, but we have to compromise and it needs to make sense.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
As the Germany situation stands, I do not feel it makes logical nor historical sense -- regardless of the site's AU status. Additionally, based on the information provided for certain characters thus far, I feel there are inconsistencies with those implied personalities (namely for the kings involved).
First, we need to establish how and why the Cains were removed from the throne. In Elizabeth's history, Ellie states that King Cain was more interested in his family's affairs than dealing with the issues of the state and things went downhill. That is a damn good reason for the people to be upset, BUT NOT necessarily a good reason for the nobles to want to get rid of the guy UNLESS his irresponsibility was affecting them, but more importantly, affecting their wealth.
Following the assumption that the nobles have a reason to get rid of King Cain and replace him with Eberstark, the nobles concerned with the degradation of the kingdom would likely at least try to appeal to the king before even considering risking their own lives to get rid of him, and encourage him to deal with specific matters to "keep the people happy", or potentially face a violent revolt. At this point, Cain would either have to do something as requested OR tell them to eff off and continue doing what he's doing. Then, and only then, would it make sense for the nobles to secretly work on finding a suitable replacement that would not only be able to fix everything, but possibly improve their situation AND work for their interests.
Second, in regard to the imprisonment and eventual release to the countryside, there are several inconsistencies and nonsensical components that need to be addressed.
- My own answer for this could be that Eberstark and Cain were close at one time, and in this way, Eberstark was merciful and let them live.
2. Who in their right mind would allow the family to live together in prison -- especially husband and wife? As stated in the current version of the history, they produce other children which equal more mouths for the state to feed and care for. I could see the children all living in a cell together, maybe even with their mother, but not the husband and wife. If you can make a believable argument for this, please state it.
3. Why in the hell would Eberstark release the Cains, provide them a house, AND support them financially?! Even if they are barely scraping by, even if their living conditions are beyond shit, it makes absolutely NO sense for this to occur. I have some suggestions to smooth this out, however, keeping this even remotely as it is, will produce a number of other problems -- of which I will try to point out.
- Again, if Cain and Eberstark had been very close (we will have to overlook the fact that Eberstark was still willing to betray & overthrow Cain) maybe, just maybe Cain could play his cards right and get them out of there. Maybe he promises never to try to get the throne. Maybe Eberstark eliminated all of Cain's remaining supporters (at least the ones that could be found -- which means the nobles who still support Cain would have to be VERY careful about their actions and who they talk to) and felt there was absolutely no threat from the Cains both existing and being out of prison.
- There will never be a sound justification for the Eberstarks supporting the Cains financially. It's one thing to finagle a way to get them out of prison, but without some sort of blood connection to go along with being very close, I can't let this one go. Either the Cains need to be scraping by doing hard labor (and maybe getting a little extra from their remaining noble supporters) OR they need to be banished from Germany entirely. The problem with banishment is that they could potentially receive international support from their allies when they were in power and be reinstated via war. However, we could say that maybe the Cains international political relationships were disintegrating as well as the kingdom's health, and Germany's allies supported the coming replacement. Even if we managed all of that, I'm not convinced that former king Cain (and perhaps not even his sons) would be released from prison -- unless, perhaps, if the Cains signed a legal document stating that they relinquished any and all claims to the throne. Again, this would secure Eberstark's position and minimize concerns of Cain getting back into power, so long as he included a law that severely punished anyone talking about making Cain king again and/or simply overthrowing Eberstark.
[/ul] Finally, (if only because I've lost my train of thought several times while writing this) not a single member of the Cain family would be able to freely leave Germany and play in Versailles -- which is fine, but limiting -- unless the French king has a personal and political alliance with Eberstark. Even if that were the case, would Elizabeth really be welcome to Versailles? Wouldn't that piss off Eberstark and damage the German-French relationship? Escape would be possible, certainly, but why would Elizabeth be the only one leaving? Why would she only be leaving to find a husband hundreds and hundreds of miles away when she would now be considered worthless in terms of wealth, status, and power? \ ----------------------------------------------------------------- Again, I apologize if I am coming off as harsh or offensive, but these things need a lot of fixing before I would feel comfortable getting this plot off the ground. Please feel free to debate these matters as much as you'd like, and offer alternatives to my suggested alternatives. Also, please include how the families, most especially the kings, feel about each other and include the justifications for the actions that have been presented thus far. I realize playing your characters in prison outside of Versailles, with little possibility of escape would be dull and extremely limiting to your characters and relationships with other characters, so let's figure this out and make it believable.
