HISTORY•
- Hector is born in France. He is the eldest son of the Foss family, despite being a very rich family, they didn’t have any titles. Laurent couldn’t care less about that, for he was a scientist, Elettra, however, wanted to belong to nobility again. Their marriage was slightly troubled because it was arranged. Elettra came from a noble family in Italy that was almost bankrupt and Laurent was getting old and needed to marry soon.
- Elettra thought that she was going to have her parents’ title once they died because her oldest sister had shamed their family a few years ago; however, the title goes to her sister instead of her. Elettra is furious.
- Gaspard is born three years later after a complicated birth, Elettra can’t have any more children and that slowly turns her into a bitter woman.
- When Hector was around five years old, he started to learn how to read, spell and count. He was quite good with numbers and was a very bright child. His father starts talking to him about science and the stars.
- Hector feels pressured by his mother to be with the youngest members of the nobility or bourgeois, but is still too young to know that the only thing that she wants is to belong to nobility again.
- His parents’ marriage started to completely fall apart when he was eight years old. Fights were frequent; Hector tries to ignore them at first, but is very affected by those arguments.
- He starts having etiquette classes. Hector finds them boring, but keeps attending them to fulfill his mother’s wishes.
- Hector starts wondering how religion and science work, he knows that one of them is wrong and that religion doesn’t seem to make sense most of the time. His curiosity about the universe goes stronger.
- When he was eleven, his father and a few more scientists were charged of heresy and blasphemy thanks to his studies. He is burned alive in the stake. Hector changed after that and becomes deeply upset. He questions more his surroundings but he is too afraid to speak about them after seeing his father being burned alive.
- Hector becomes more reserved about himself. He actually starts avoiding the subject and tends to focus his talks on the person he’s communicating with or any random subject. He prefers to talk about the weather than about himself.
- At the age of sixteen, Hector meets a girl from nobility in a party and she becomes his first love.
- His mother tries to remarry, but she is considered to be ‘too old’ to marry, besides, she can’t have any more children. This obviously bothers her.
- The girl that Hector loves becomes engaged to a wealthier and noble man, she eventually leaves Hector. His heart was broken and after that, he doesn’t let himself fall in love that easily ever again.
- Hector starts attending to parties to forget his heartbreak. He discovers that he also likes wine, going to the opera and women. Hector starts having liaisons with the female population.
- When Hector was twenty, he traveled to Florence for two years. The main purpose of this trip was to deepen his study in medicine and become a physician.
- During his trip to Florence, he meets his family on his mother’s side and creates connections in Italy.
- Hector returns two weeks after his twenty-fourth birthday and receives an invitation to go to court to work as a physician. His mother starts pressuring him to marry a girl that belongs to nobility. Hector doesn’t listen much to her.
